Oak Street Baptist Church
11340 North Oak Street
Soddy Daisy, TN 37379
Oak Street Baptist is located in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, a bedroom community of Chattanooga. Soddy Daisy is a diverse area. Incorporated in the area are tin-roof shacks located across the road from $300,000 homes. The roots of Oak Street go back to about 1894 when the first Baptist church was organized in the area. Today the church has an average of 135 Sunday morning attendees and a budget of approximately $210,000 dollars. We spend about $10,000 per year in local benevolence helping people in all kind of situations. We have bought cars for single mothers and wives of men who are in drug rehab. We help with rent and utility bills for those out of work. We also have helped some folks with ongoing medical bills who have little income. Our desire is to minister to those who truly need a helping hand. We are also involved in supporting financially and on hands the Orphanage Emmanuel in Honduras with mission teams traveling there on a regular basis. God has been good to us and we are seeking to bring glory to Him by helping those He places in our path.
Summerland Baptist Church
80 SCR 28-4
Taylorsville,MS 39168
Summerland is an active and growing church in a rural setting. A majority of our people come from the Summerland community, but there is a significant number of folks who come from Taylorsville, Stringer, or Soso. Last year we averaged 106 in Sunday School and I would guess we run around 130 in worship. Several men from the church are involved in outreach visitation with me on Tuesday nights. We also have a deacon ministry plan that we are currently updating so we can make sure to address the needs of our community. Also, every year we have Friend Day and other outreach events where our member take an active role in bringing their friends to Christ. I don't know the population of the Summerland community and I'm not sure how I could find that out since we are not an incorporated city, and our mailing address is in Taylorsville. Summerland has five staff members: Pastor, Minister of Music, Minister of Youth, Minister of Children, and secretary. The pastor position is full-time and the others are all part time. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.
First Baptist Church
PO BOX 357
Taylorsville, MS 39168
First Baptist was founded over 100 years ago when a group of Christians desired to begin a church in the Taylorsville Community. Since that time, the community and the church have experienced significant change. The small rural town of Taylorsville is home to about 1500 people now. The church has a membership of about 500. Average Sunday school attendance is about 212. The church offers two Sunday morning worship services and a variety of additional Bible studies during the week. The church is kingdom focused, desiring to reach the un-churched in the community with the message of hope in Jesus Christ. We have several community outreach programs, but a limited benevolence budget does not allow us to help all those in the community we would like to help. We are pleased to be a part of Lightshine and hope it will provide the resources to help more people in our small community, especially at Christmas.
Decherd Presbyterian Church
P.O. Box 266
Decherd, TN 37324
The town of Decherd and its adjoining neighbor, Winchester, are the center of Franklin County and include a population of about 2,000 that live in economic conditions from real poverty to considerable wealth. As a small church, of approximately 100 members, we are faced on a regular basis with the needs of those on the lower end of the spectrum, and attempt to meet these requests for assistance with the limited resources available to us.
We appreciate the objectives of your program and your inclusion of our congregation as a possible recipient of the Christmas funds to be used for local needs during the holiday season. We can assure you that there will be no difficulty in selecting individuals or families that sincerely need some assistance.
United Methodist Women
138 Hazel Avenue
McKenzie, TN 38201
We are a group of women who are members of three small rural churches that are all on one charge and are served by one pastor. The churches are Blooming Grove, Community Grove, and Seminary United Methodist Churches and are located near McKenzie, TN. The total attendance for all three churches is approximately 100 each Sunday. We currently have a program going which involves all members from the three churches and raises money to buy toys and clothing for underprivileged children at Christmas time. This year a Dinner Theatre was held at Blooming Grove Church and the proceeds were given to the UMW to buy for the children. We get most of our needy families from our local school system, but will also take other families that are brought to our attention. We ask our families to give us a list of their children's needs first and their wants second, and then we divide the families up among our members and go shopping. We usually will also help a family or two throughout the year who we find are in dire need of assistance. Over the past few years several children have had a brighter Christmas thanks to this program. It's a lot of work but the reward is knowing you have helped a child who might not have gotten anything for Christmas.
