My name is Ken Robertson. I am a dentist in Brentwood, Tennessee. I have lived here since 1987 with my wife, Lynne, and have 3 great kids. Lynne is a speech-language pathologist; she specializes in children's needs. We teach a preschool Sunday School class at Brentwood Baptist Church. Our weeks are filed with baseball, soccer, and piano lessons.
I like to fish and read a good book (when I have time!)
Lynne attends weekly Bible Studies and is a room mother for our 6-year old son.
In short, we are a pretty normal, busy family.
So, why this website?
I grew up in the southern Mississippi town of Taylorsville (population: 975). My mom and dad had my two brothers and me in church every Wednesday and Sunday. Now, I can't exactly say that I wanted to be in church every Wednesday and Sunday; nevertheless, we were there. It wasn't until I became a parent that I realized that church is an integral part of what creates that inner voice within a small child that dictates what is right and what is wrong later in life.
That voice is perhaps more important today than ever.
Because my childhood church was so important in shaping my life, I began several years ago to give money to the benevolence committee at Christmas time. It began very simply and anonymously and selfishly as kind of a Christmas present to myself. I was helping my childhood church and feeling blessed, not only to be able to give money, but to know that someone in the small town where I grew up would be helped at Christmas.
BUT THEN A VERY POWERFUL THING HAPPENED.
When I called a member of the benevolence committee, the mother of two of my best childhood friends, to tell her to expect the check in the mail....
SHE TOLD ME HOW THE MONEY WAS GOING TO BE USED!
When I got off the phone, I was floating on air. I had learned that I had helped provide Christmas for three children whose parents had been killed in a car wreck, as well as 3 other families who were having hard times, which she described to me.
To know that I had directly helped four families to have a Christmas that they may not have had left me with an indescribable feeling of happiness and joy. I truly believe it was Heaven sent because it prompted me to begin to think of a way to harness that feeling, to capture the blessing sent to me through this gift and share it with others.
Knowing how my money helped another family was the key.
So God sent me this crazy idea. If you send money to one of these churches, they will contact you to tell you how you helped a family. Simple, but potentially profoundly powerful.
To be honest, I don't know if this is going to work or not. I'm just taking the handoff from the Lord and running as hard as I can.
But if it does work, a lot of people are going to be helped.
If it works, you will experience the joy and receive the blessings that come from helping others.
This is not an after-Christmas sale or putting up flashing lights in your yard.
This is how God meant Christmas to be.
